As smartphones get more expensive, and the innovation in new devices gets less grand, there's less reason to upgrade your device every two years. It's a problem for all device manufacturers which rely upon handset sales to grease the wheels of their business, but Apple thinks it has a solution. The company has teamed up with a number of Chinese banks to offer interest free credit on a number of new iPhone purchases.

With a newly-emerging middle class and massive population, China is a big market for the whole technology industry. But the country's economic woes, a trade war and zero-margin homegrown rivals has made it tough for all the big names to do business there. In Apple's case, the company recently had to tell investors that it wasn't going to sell as many devices in Asia as it had done before due to "trade tensions."

According to Reuters, buyers of new iPhones can qualify for interest-free credit and pay around $41 a month for an iPhone XR, or $53 a month for the XS. As before, the company, which has historically avoided discounting its products, will knock some cash off the price if users trade-in an older iPhone. It's hoped that these measures will be enough to juice the slower sales of the new handsets.

The problem with the price is inflation which is getting out of control. Median income in the US has not moved in 20 years, meanwhile the price of everything has doubled, this isn’t just a problem in the US, it’s global. That’s why debt has gone through the roof, 1998 median income 58.6k, median house price 148k. 2018 median income 61k, median house price 240k. Cars are up 30%, gas 50%, average grocery bill 100%. Wages still the same. Crazy prices aren’t an Apple only problem. Government “borrowed” your retirement money to keep inflation climbing meanwhile doing nothing about wages.

I dint think that will break the  healty habbit of buying superb Android phones. Especially when you can get mazingly decemt phone for half the price in China.
Then take into account country solidarity in the landscape of trade war and you got answer  why Iphone sales declinging.
I doubt these tacticts by Apple will be successful  Having said that Tim has at least to do something to shut  the share holders up for now.

I see that old mentality from 2012 you are stuck in.  Apple lost it's charms long time ago.  Nowadays Android is superior in many ways and doesn't break your bank. Simple as that.

Good luck with that. Financing a cell phone is never a popular idea in China, even interest free, unlike in US where everything has a 12-24 month plan. Most people would rather spend $200-500 in cash on a Huawei or Xiaomi than finance a $1,000 (or $749) iPhone

There is also a limit to the amount of people in this world who appreciate aesthetics and quality, some are happy with copycats and inferior phones while the rest of us have an iphone.
